ISAAC ZHANG

Managing Director,

Client Success,

Shanghai

Joined at 2014.

Became MD at 2016.

“I never thought of this future,” said Isaac when asked about his career.  He always dreamt of a job that is international, highly external and something that can drive his personal growth. Meltwater fits him perfectly. What attracted him is not only an above-average salary, but also the constant challenge and innovation which push him out of his comfort zone and allows him to improve.

Q. What is Meltwater China to you?

I am really happy to see Meltwater’s growth, from plainly an IT company with potential to one of the biggest player in the SaaS business. We have managed to acquire various AI companies, including Hong Kong’s Klarity. Our annual revenue also reached 250 million USD this year. It is obvious that the Chinese market is getting more important, and there are much more opportunities for us to explore. The next step for us is to apply our unique methodology within the Chinese culture. We think through the minds of our customers. We interpret the challenges in their businesses and provide our service through digitization. This whole ideology is the base of our work.

Q. What is the most exciting thing ever happened in your career with Meltwater?

There actually are a lot of exciting moments during the 4 years I’m here. I am really proud to witness the process where youngsters that I have recruited turned into actual leaders. Personally, the most exciting experience would be participating in MEST Africa’s graduation ceremony as a Meltwater Global Top 10 in 2016. I think its really fulfilling to have the opportunity to give back to the community, other than contributing directly to the business. I have seen a lot of African students managed to develop their dreams with the subsidy from our entrepreneur training. It was through these kinds of experience you truly understand Meltwater’s believe in entrepreneurship.

Q. What do you hope your team could get from their time in Meltwater?

No matter how long you are staying, I hope that everyone on the team could be better than their yesterday self. This is the most important thing for me. Our recruitment process is actually quite sophisticated, and one of the section is the mingle session. This is basically to invite all the candidates to our office before the day of the interview, explain to them our daily task in the company, let them understand more of our culture. If we chose you, we will guarantee a 100% commitment in developing your potential.

Q. What is your advice on success?

I always tell my team to be positive, to absorb the energy from people around you. I never thought my success comes from technical skills, but rather from my curiosity and sincerity towards the business and my clients.

Q. What do you want Meltwater to achieve in 2018?

I hope our Beijing office can become a cultural hub, to continue our strong performance and develop my team into a future Global Top 10.

Chloe said her childhood dream was to be a news anchor. But her dream altered its shape as she learned more about the world.

"I wanted to be someone who can impact and inspire others. "

She joins Meltwater when there isn’t an office in China. Now she is the leader of Beijing’s Client Success team, accumulating over 500 clients and also handles all the work on establishing a new CS office in Beijing.

Q. What is your first image of Meltwater?

I was shocked during the interview. The recruiters are great at assessing people, most of them gave feedback to us immediately. After I joined I realise the culture here is really cool. I was also lucky to have the chance to participate in the annual meeting in Mexico soon after joining. CEO at-the-time Jorn Lyseggen shared a lot about the design of our products and IT trends at the time, which helped me learned a lot about Meltwater’s development strategies. During those times we spent days on workshops, but we also went clubbing till midnight. No matter how crazy we got the previous night, everyone could still be fully concentrated in classes. It was that time I really understand what is “work hard, play harder”.

Q. What is the most exciting thing ever happened in your career with Meltwater?

In 2016 I mentioned to my boss of an idea to open a new office. And on last year's Greater China Summit my boss suddenly said “ I want you to own this project with full responsibility of founding CS Beijing” My boss told all my colleagues about this project in a dinner afterwards and everyone came to congratulate me. This is very special experience for me and I will never forget it.

Q. Being a key personnel in the Client Success team, what is your target?

I want to turn Meltwater into a marketing product similar to Microsoft’s Office, to a state where whenever a marketing or PR department wants information for market analysis, they will think of us. We are not quite at this level yet. There needs to be a process of branding. We need our client manager to have a bigger picture of our client’s business environment. If we can provide more tailored advice, then our clients would think of us more frequently in their work.

Q. Rumor has it that you graduate from Shanghai Theatre Academy, is it true?

Haha, I was joking with newbies when they joined. I never thought they would believe it. I'm just a good pretender.

Q. What do you hope Meltwater to achieve in 2018?

Other than continuing the growth of our business, it would be great if I can work with more intelligent talents. I hope to cultivate more people that could replace me, and potentially someone that could open another new office in China.

Meet Minsi

Minsi Fan

Managing Director,

Key Account Team,

Greater China

Joined at 2012

MD at Shanghai since 2015

“Get out of your comfort zone” is Minsi's motto.

Joining since 2012, this is Minsi fifth year in Meltwater. Minsi started in Client Aquisition at the Hong Kong office, within a year she was already a manager and started leading a team with her great performance. From 2015, she relocated to Shanghai as Managing Director, handling clients relations in China.

Q. Why choose Meltwater in the beginning?

Originally I chose to join Meltwater was to learn more about B2B Sales. I knew that Meltwater had a great international trainee programme. It allows me to have direct interaction with decision makers, which would be wonderful for my own growth. Also, I love the culture here. That's why I joined. Since then it had been 5 years and I still think that what I am doing is very interesting. I understand more and more about the company as I build my career here. In China, it is still a very new concept to maintain client loss and increase sales in the same department, so we trying to creating something new here. Creating something new is cool. On the other hand, being able to build and lead a team and watch it grow is something very meaningful to me. It pushes me to grow as well.

Q. You always tell our newbies to “get out of your comfort zone”, why is that?

It is only when you can get out of your comfort zone, that you can be truly confident. In Meltwater, we are always negotiating with MD or above from other companies. I still remember the first meeting I did in Meltwater was with a CEO. Of course, you would fail in the beginning, but through actual practice and experience, you will improve, and you will understand how to be more professional. When I was 24, I learned how to figure out the needs of these decision makers, and managed to make them our clients.

Q. What is the most memorable moment in the 5 years?

I remembered in December of 2013 me and my first newbie achieved 5 months consecutive on target. In December we achieved 200%. That was a great Christmas.

Q. How do you view our “work hard play hard” culture?

I think it is a very important point in our culture. No matter how busy work is, I will always take the time to work out. Sports is a very important part of my life. I always go to the gym, or sometimes go hiking with friends. I would also choose sports that required teamwork as the theme for team building in our team. Working out and sweating is a very good way to release stress, and many types of sports could improve bonding within the team.

Q. What would you say to those who wanted to join us?

Joining Meltwater is not solely about the sales experience. It needs you to work hard, and your personal growth depends on what you do day by day. If you want to join a growing team that can truly impact the APAC region, then you should join us.

In Meltwater, we value everyone’s insight. You can talk to everyone about your opinions and recommendations, from your manager to the CEO. We are willing to spend a lot of time and effort to allow you to integrate into our culture, and this is something that both myself and the company are very proud of.

Remember, If you wanted to join Meltwater CS China,  you need to understand yourself, but not answering questions mechanically, or trying to be someone else.
