If you asked who is the best in analyzing things in the office, everyone would have mentioned Vivian.

She is a lover of news, especially in war or poverty-related subjects. While studying Journalism in Sheffield, UK, she did not choose to enter traditional media as a journalist. Instead, she joined Meltwater, and use another way to realize her beliefs in the news: leading the Key Account Insight team in Shanghai, providing news analyzing and counseling services to various companies.

Q. What is your first impression when you joined Meltwater?

 

During my first two weeks here, I just thought this is a very fun company. At the time we have a snooker table and a ping-pong table, so people was always having fun. But then I realise while everyone looks young, they all had a very serious attitude towards their work. I think Meltwater has a very mature training system, and that includes items as insignificant as time management.

Q. What is the most exciting thing you have encountered in Meltwater?

I won’t say this is exciting, but I’ll tell a story that really touched me. In 2016 before I got married, there was a period where I was particularly busy. One day when I’m having a meeting, my colleague asked me to come out, saying that there was some emergency issue with a client. And when I got out, suddenly the Wedding March started playing in the office. Cindy and many others gave me a surprise with cake and flowers. I also got a thank-you card from Ewan, our area director in China.

Q. What do you think of Meltwater China?

 

From me handling just a couple of clients to leading a team serving hundreds of clients, I think Meltwater have always been in the lead over the past 3 years. Media monitoring is a large cake, and many consulting firms would like to come and take a piece. In China, a lot of local media monitoring companies focus on traditional media outlets, but our service in Greater China would be able to cover a real-time online monitoring scope globally, in 52 different languages. With our acquisition of Klarity, we would be able to provide evaluations that are more fitting to our local market, including Weixin, Weibo and other major social media platforms.

Q. Why everyone says you are the “Queen of Reports”? Can you share us your secrets in that?

I need to be thankful that Meltwater has such a powerful platform in providing us data. My team in Key Account Insight focused on grabbing data and turning them into information. We analyse the causes behind these data, exploring news trends and then advising on strategies in marketing accordingly.

For example, Insurance is a field where there is an increasing product similarity. In such case, we would help our client to view it from the perspective of the big data, in terms of the frequency of keywords during searches. Here we would know that it was the “high price-performance ratio”, “reliability”, and “internationalisation” which makes the product special.

On the other hand, sometimes we could see the company’s business data or manager’s speech being quoted in other sites on our platform. These could be details that our clients themselves could not realise. Another interesting example would be makeup brands: through listening to the community, we could list out products that were most discussed. Our reports are not just beneficial to marketing, but could also be referenced for stock management.

Q. So as a married person, how do you balance work and family?

Since weekdays are busy and challenging, I would always make sure to relax during weekends. Maybe cooking with my husband, or take a walk at the park, or play with my cats.

 

Q. What would you like to achieve in Meltwater in 2018?

 

In terms of work, I would like to bring the Key Account Insight team to a new level, bringing clients a diversified, personalised service, and becoming a drive for business growth in Greater China. In terms of personal life, I hope my cats are as cute as always.
